About Tammarê

TAMMARÊ is an independent New York design house founded by Zimbabwean designer Rodwin Makanjera. It creates contemporary clothing, accessories, interiors and items for the home from Zimbabwean cultural sources.

The name TAMMARÊ comes from the way Rodwin’s grandmother pronounced his mother’s name, Thamary.

TAMMARÊ begins with specific sources, plants, fruits, places, structures and symbols, and develops them through design. Its work is organized through nine cultural categories, creating a framework for future collections.

Collection 1 introduces three of these categories: Nature & Geography, Fruits & Foods, and Civilizations & Symbols. It begins with four silk scarves inspired by Gloriosa Superba, Zimbabwe’s national flower; Matohwe, a seasonal wild fruit; Great Zimbabwe, the pre-colonial stone city that gave the country its name; and Harare’s Eastgate Centre.

The remaining six cultural categories will be developed through future collections. Each source will be explored through clothing, accessories, interiors and items for the home, using different materials, techniques and collaborations.

TAMMARÊ is building a contemporary design language rooted in Zimbabwean culture and developed from one source into many forms.
