The Source
The dry-stone coursing of Great Zimbabwe: granite laid without mortar, each course carrying the one above it. The design works from the coursing itself, not from the silhouette of the walls.
The Design
Held tone-on-tone, sand on ivory. Removing colour contrast leaves the structure to be read by light and by the grain of the twill, which is how the stone is read in place.
The Method
Originally developed as a woven jacquard and moved to printed tone-on-tone silk twill. The change is why the object is photographed in soft directional light rather than hard raking light.
